Interior Windows

Remember this post I wrote a while ago..? I keep coming back to it for many reasons, but one of the most inspiring things about Johanna's space to me is the use of interior windows throughout her home. I can spot three of them in the above photo alone...

I love natural light, and using old windows that might otherwise end up in a landfill seems like a wonderful idea to let in more light...

I like them as a way to suggest privacy - somewhat playfully...

I like them in entryways,

and as mudrooms...

Sometimes, I even like the idea of interior windows in place of knocking down entire walls... And not only because it might be a way of saving storage or counter space, but also because - isn't it alluring to just get a peek into the next room over, without sacrificing the sense of intimacy that smaller spaces create..?

A suggestion of what lies beyond and the promise of loving light ahead... Yes, I think I like this idea. I like it a lot.

  1. I love this post. That mudroom has been in my inspiration files for the longest time. I especially love the waviness of old glass and how it not only bounces light, but ripples it. Would love to add some interior windows in a home.

  9. Ahhhh loved this post! When I read your posts they always make me want to own a home of my own so I can actually DO this. I love wandering through old salvage yards from old buildings and just amazed at how much people just throw away. So many beautiful details that often go over-looked. Very inspiring post. Thank you so much for sharing! Happy St. Patrick's Day!! :)

  11. Uh-hum.....this is quite good. It gave me an idea for our own house :) We have a great salvage shop right down the street from us that is full of old windows and doors and lumber. You wouldn't believe some of the beautiful things I've seen for sale there!

  14. me too, me too! I love interior windows, especially salvaged ones. And any door with a transom immediately steals my heart. Isn't it funny the little things that we fall in love with? But measure, measure, measure. I have a set of antique doors that are nearly 8 feet tall and weigh almost 300 pounds sitting in my basement because I bought them from a salvage place in Maine before I talked to my contractor who told me I couldn't use them. Boo-hoo.

  15. Hmm.... you can't cut them down, or make the opening a bit taller..? I still think somehow, somewhere, you will use them one day. You'll see.

  17. Oh I love the idea Maria! We have replaced a few of our internal doors with recycled french doors and then re-purposed our solid doors in other parts of our home or passed them onto friends. I love how much light there is in your gorgeous images. I hope you are having a wonderful week my dear friend. ~ Tina xx

  19. I love love love old windows. We put a big one between our living room and dining room/great room. It opens up the whole space and allows for chatting with friends or yelling at kids who forget you can see them.
Very pretty images - I want more windows now.

  25. These are all very inspiring images. My house has glasses doors in the living areas, which I like for their sense of continuity and openness, but I'd never thought to install actual windows between rooms for an intriguing sense of life at one remove. You've got me wanting some now.

  27. Miss Missy, I somehow missed your question - so sorry..! There are many places where you can find old windows: salvage yards, sometimes you can find them at yard sales and also places like Habitat for Humanity... Another place to check out if you are looking for something a little more special (like stained-glass or leaded-glass windows) would be ebay or antique stores. And I'd check your local Craigslist, too. :)

Such beautiful ideas. Light is very important and interior windows make so much sense for this purpose. It seems as though it would be so obvious, but it has never even occurred to me. Thanks.

  55. Your blog is very impressive! I was introduced to your blog through our mutual friend, Joanne. She thought I would like it and I love it! I love the natural light coming into a room. Instead of a wall, the interior windows brings in more lights to the room. Thanks for sharing your inspiration.

  56. I love all these photos! there's an old window in the basement of my apartment building, and its been there for years. I have half a mind to just go "borrow" it and hang it up in my living room over the wall. not quite the same effect, but i love it when a window acts a picture frame on the wall. (of course, i'd return the window to said dingy, dusty basement when I moved out!)

  61. Hi Anonymous,

The photos on this post aren't from our home... so, unfortunately, I can't help you. I you are in fact talking about out dining room, though, the table in there came from a little antiques/junk store in Landrum, SC.

  63. Your themes are so simple! For me, these are more appealing. I'm currently living in St. Louis, MO. I moved here last month. I'm now planning for windows replacement because I want the outdoor air to pass easily to my room, and I also want my home interior to have a touch of Goth design. Next, I'll start painting the walls with white paints, and this whole week, I'll gather some good accessories for my room.

  64. Love the mudroom. May also work for a sort of foyer in my small home. Love your designs.
