Noah's bedroom

My little boy's room.

My little boy who will be going to first grade this fall.

My little guy who is learning how to spell words and write proud, deliberate numbers...

He who collects leaves and rocks and seashells; and dried flowers and the spiked fruit from gumball trees...

He, to whom I read Goodnight Moon not so long ago in my arms, rocking back and forth, back and forth...

My Little Prince who is growing up. The little man who is becoming so wise. I worry about his heart - how it will be broken, and how that is part of growing up. But I tell myself: he'll be fine. It will soon be time for him to go from the safety of his little school to the big school. His world is getting bigger and bigger every day. And he'll take it all in stride and be just fine...

I, on the other hand, might have a little bit of a harder time. But I, too, will be fine. For my little boy is growing up - and that is a good thing. I hope the world treats him with the love and kindness that he deserves, and that he, in turn, will treat the world in the same way.

*For those of you who asked, the color on the top is Silver Sea SR209 (the same I used for the bi-fold doors, since I had leftover) and on the bottom, the color is Dust Storm EE2046C. You can get them both at Lowe's.*

  1. It looks like a room that makes growing up fun. And your words show how much comfort and support and love he will have as he goes through all the phases of growing up. Lucky boy. Lucky mom.

  2. What a beautiful room; while we're on the topic, what a beautiful house - this is exactly what I want in a house, too!
I remember first grade (and elementary school in general) as one of the best times of my life. Everything was fund and new and exciting. I hope Noah feels the same way!

  3. What a sweet bedroom! I often wonder the same things for our 2 year old, but a mothers love is the most powerful influence in a child's life, and your son is loved very much, he will do wonderful in school. :)

I am actually just wrapping up a post about our son's room as well, small world! I'll be posting it later today.

Thanks for sharing your sweet little boy's room with us!

  5. What a cool room for a little guy to grow in...what are the colors of the wall? I like the split shades.

  7. So, so beautiful.

When my son was a senior in high school he went on a retreat. The parents had to write kids letters that they would read on the last day. I wrote to him, "Take care of that little boy inside you. He's mine and I love him."

  11. That's a lovely room for a boy - not branded, not too macho, not full of stuff, but with the simple serenity of the rest of your house and so real. Lucky Noah to be given the peace to make his own way in his head without decorating clamour. The line of drawings is great, and The Little Prince is a top favourite in our house too.

  13. Happy Sunday Maria! Noah's room is wonderful!!! I have 2 girls and a boy and I find it a bit hard to decorate my son's room because the girl's rooms come so naturally...I'm gonna take a few pointers from the great space you created for your son!

I do have a clothesline hanging in my son's room with all of his "art," just like you do :)

    :)T

p.s. you asked about the white paint in my home - the {new} living room/creative space has Pale Ivory (Valspar) on the walls and the white trim throughout was done by the builder so I don't even know what it's called...I'll be in trouble when the little can of touch up paint runs out...

  15. Oh Maria - what a beautiful calm but at the same time stimulating place for a little boy. The colours are just wonderful and I love how you display Noah's art and writing on his wall. I also love Noah's lovely collection of shells, rocks etc... Just remember Maria that if Noah has such a wonderful safe and loving personal space to call home, and such loving and caring parents, he will be fine. There is nothing like the shelter of a parents arms or the safe feeling of one's home to make little hearts sing:) Thank you so much for sharing Noah's room, it is just gorgeous:) - Txx

  16. Beautifully articulated. I feel the same way about my little girl. She is only two but I worry for the day she leaves my arms to start school. It is wonderful and melancholy all together.

  18. What a sweet place for a wonderful little guy. I am sure his surroundings makes him thrive. It is hard to watch them grow up, no matter what age. The worries will not subside, but it is also empowering to see them take off, testing their wings, and then succeed. Thanks for sharing! XOXO

  20. Noah is a lucky boy since his room is a nice bright space and it looks like fun to be in that room!
I think we have that same bed in our youngest son's room-he's 14 and doesn't really mind if I
"decorate" his room...so far. I guess that will change soon enough! But I still make it a point to go in his room and add things that I think he'd like. My other two sons, who are older, won't allow me to do any decorating anymore.
It is clearly their own space. I respect that.
    Have a great week,
    JolieAnne

  21. maria- noah's room is wonderful--simple and understated--the perfect backdrop for his creations and collections. and, it's a real treat to see a different side of you, the maternal side. you are so sweet and so strong! noah is lucky to have you to come to when he needs comfort.

  22. Oh Maria.....what a beautifully calm and lovely room. Your little guy must have sweet dreams in that room. I completely understand the apprehension about their worlds getting bigger(that is a great way of looking at it) and the belief that everything will be just fine. It will....and I remember all to well reading my little ones the same book and rocking them back & forth, back & forth....what a beautiful post my friend. So lovely.....

yes, my boy turned 15 this weekend. as he and his friends got out of the car at the mall, he slammed the door, without saying good bye. he quickly turned around and opened the door, leaned in the car and gave me a kiss... yep, that did me in.
i love that i share, this motherhood thing, with you. ; )
    it's lovely here.

  24. Looks like the perfect jumping off point for a little boy to spread his wings. Sigh, I feel your "growing pains," with a 10, 8, and 4 year old I'm still going through them as well. It gets easier and harder all at the same time. And I boo hooed like a baby when The Baby started school for the first time this year. It still hurts a little every time I drop him off, but he loves it and that makes me happy.

Of course you are worrying about what's around the corner for that sweet, handsome and good hearted little boy. (That is our job!)He will be just fine. He will be more than fine. He is blessed with the best parents! xx Mon

so funny that we both posted about our kids growing up. my heart always breaks for my kids when i sense there has been some kind of disappointment in their lives, although they seem to be remarkably resiliant most of the time. much more so than i am!!!
also, my son's room is such a similar color to noah's! what a lucky little guy to have such a nice room to grow up in.

Yes, the constant worrying about our little people. Life is never the same since they arrived and I find myself feeling more and more proud of my own parents and the way the coped.

I am sure your little prince will grow up to be a great king one day. Until then, try to enjoy these precious years he is still yours..

  46. Hi Maria,

Love your house and what you've done to it. Can you tell me where you got your son's bedframe? I love the size and the fact that you can store underneath the frame. Am looking for something similar. Thanks much! - kim

  47. Hi Kim -

Noah's bed is actually one of a bunkbed set (we have the other one in the attic), and we got it at a neighborhood yard sale, but I believe it was originally bought at one of those unfinished furniture places... (We repainted it when we got it.) I don't know what your budget is, but I found these similar ones online:

    http://www.onewayfurniture.com/linon-blue-bunk-bed-90153blu-a-kd-u.html

    http://www.onewayfurniture.com/walker-edison-white-twin-over-twin-bunk-bed-bwtotwh.html

But I'd definitely check out your local craigslist or unfinished furniture store first and see what you come up with.

    Hope that helps!
