Remember this post I wrote a while ago..? I keep coming back to it for many reasons, but one of the most inspiring things about Johanna's space to me is the use of interior windows throughout her home. I can spot three of them in the above photo alone...
I love natural light, and using old windows that might otherwise end up in a landfill seems like a wonderful idea to let in more light...
Sometimes, I even like the idea of interior windows in place of knocking down entire walls... And not only because it might be a way of saving storage or counter space, but also because - isn't it alluring to just get a peek into the next room over, without sacrificing the sense of intimacy that smaller spaces create..?
A suggestion of what lies beyond and the promise of loving light ahead... Yes, I think I like this idea. I like it a lot.

I love this post. That mudroom has been in my inspiration files for the longest time. I especially love the waviness of old glass and how it not only bounces light, but ripples it. Would love to add some interior windows in a home.
ReplyDeleteI love the many panes in old windows. They really accent the interior space. Where do you find old windows?
ReplyDeletei agree, i love interior windows. my parents have some in their kitchen that i am always envious of! these photos are so pretty and inspiring!
ReplyDeleteAnd I know you're going to do something beautiful with this idea!
ReplyDeleteSarah :)
i've never seen that before! how neat!
ReplyDeleteHow gorgeous! I love the light-filled rooms in every photo. LOVE the entryway shutters!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Love all the ideas!
ReplyDeleteJody
Wow, this post has got me thing about ways to bring more light into my quite dark house. That last photo with the painted floors is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh loved this post! When I read your posts they always make me want to own a home of my own so I can actually DO this. I love wandering through old salvage yards from old buildings and just amazed at how much people just throw away. So many beautiful details that often go over-looked. Very inspiring post. Thank you so much for sharing! Happy St. Patrick's Day!! :)
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Bonnie
I love so many of these pictures.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you know that I love your blog and your home and have nominated you for a Beautiful Blogger award over on my blog.
~Sam
Uh-hum.....this is quite good. It gave me an idea for our own house :) We have a great salvage shop right down the street from us that is full of old windows and doors and lumber. You wouldn't believe some of the beautiful things I've seen for sale there!
ReplyDeletei really like how they used windows and walls to creat a mudroom in an open living room.
ReplyDeleteI love all the ideas! Fantastic post! Thank you for sharing..~lulu
ReplyDeleteme too, me too! I love interior windows, especially salvaged ones. And any door with a transom immediately steals my heart. Isn't it funny the little things that we fall in love with? But measure, measure, measure. I have a set of antique doors that are nearly 8 feet tall and weigh almost 300 pounds sitting in my basement because I bought them from a salvage place in Maine before I talked to my contractor who told me I couldn't use them. Boo-hoo.
ReplyDeleteHmm.... you can't cut them down, or make the opening a bit taller..? I still think somehow, somewhere, you will use them one day. You'll see.
ReplyDeletexoox,
-maria
i like it too - especially reclaimed windows
ReplyDeleteOh I love the idea Maria! We have replaced a few of our internal doors with recycled french doors and then re-purposed our solid doors in other parts of our home or passed them onto friends. I love how much light there is in your gorgeous images. I hope you are having a wonderful week my dear friend. ~ Tina xx
ReplyDeleteso pretty. love the light fixtures in the top two images.
ReplyDeleteI love love love old windows. We put a big one between our living room and dining room/great room. It opens up the whole space and allows for chatting with friends or yelling at kids who forget you can see them.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty images - I want more windows now.
Beautiful examples! Interior windows, I love them ALL.
ReplyDeleteHi lovely friend, I am so with you. I also crave natural light and windows. (It is part of our Scandinavian blood, sister!)
ReplyDeleteThe red mud room is playful and fabulous!
Cyber hug, Mon
fabulous blog... so happy to have found you..xx
ReplyDeleteHmmm, yes, I now like this idea a lot, too! Where to put interior windows will now occupy my thoughts as I go to sleep tonight. And I want a mud room like that!!!! Thank you for sharing. – g
ReplyDeleteQué lindas fotos, me encantan !! vos tenés una ventana colgada de un baño me parece, me pareció buenísima la idea.
ReplyDeleteThese are all very inspiring images. My house has glasses doors in the living areas, which I like for their sense of continuity and openness, but I'd never thought to install actual windows between rooms for an intriguing sense of life at one remove. You've got me wanting some now.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed this post, that mudroom is amazing!

Miss Missy, I somehow missed your question - so sorry..! There are many places where you can find old windows: salvage yards, sometimes you can find them at yard sales and also places like Habitat for Humanity... Another place to check out if you are looking for something a little more special (like stained-glass or leaded-glass windows) would be ebay or antique stores. And I'd check your local Craigslist, too. :)

Hi Maria! I absolutely adore this idea!!! Wish I could build my house from scratch and include more interior windows :)

Maria,
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful ideas. Light is very important and interior windows make so much sense for this purpose. It seems as though it would be so obvious, but it has never even occurred to me. Thanks.
xx,
Denise
A lovely post Maria and wonderful ideas - love the idea of using interior windows to create space and add light. Thanks.
ReplyDeletei love this post--yes windows...ewspecially all of these windows! oxo, deb
ReplyDeleteooh....I like it a lot too! So beautiful and anything that lets in more & more light is so a-ok with me! These are gorgeous and I have to say...that mudroom built in is such a good idea for folks whose front doors just open up right into the living room...I like that idea a lot! :)

ReplyDeletexoxo,
Monika
Absolutely beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteNess xx
I love this idea! I think I might try this if we tear down a wall. I think your so right about how it adds light without sacrificing intimacy. I'm excited to follow your beautiful blog.
ReplyDeleteJanice
I love these examples that you curated, especially the beautiful woodwork in the last image and that glorious red mudroom that just screams WOW!
ReplyDeleteThe whole house is spectacular, especially with all that light, as you've mentioned. But I honestly don't know what to do with myself about that mudroom. I could live in that one room, just to gaze at the red brick wall. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteLove them all- great blog! :)
ReplyDeletei am gasping! oh my...so incredibly beautiful! i want to replace all of my walls with beautiful windows! xoxo t
ReplyDeletei love the idea of re-using old windows. i'd love to salvage a stained glass window to have in my home someday. the light in the photos you chose is great!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am looking forward to the immense fun found in cutting holes in walls/ mounting windows in them...honestly... wink.
ReplyDeletemaria, te he extrañado muchisimo... muchisimo, muchisimo, muchisimo...

ps. your night stand is awesome, obviously.
I've got a "thing" for interior windows too! We have a transom we put up ourselves between the kitchen and dining room.

As much as I love all these images, and I do, I do, I would love to see a new post from you . Are you terrible busy? Cause that's ok, just hope everything is fine in your life.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your collections of pictures. You have such excellent taste. I hope you're having an amazing week.
ReplyDelete:)
Great Post!! I love this interior element and I think that it one that is often overlooked in the building process. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI adore that splash of red for the mudroom. These are all so pretty. There is nothing like heaps of natural light.
ReplyDeleteHola María! pasé por aquí a dejarte sañudos y Felices Pascuas!!
ReplyDeletebeso,
Marce
Great post - the windows are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is very impressive! I was introduced to your blog through our mutual friend, Joanne. She thought I would like it and I love it! I love the natural light coming into a room. Instead of a wall, the interior windows brings in more lights to the room. Thanks for sharing your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI love all these photos! there's an old window in the basement of my apartment building, and its been there for years. I have half a mind to just go "borrow" it and hang it up in my living room over the wall. not quite the same effect, but i love it when a window acts a picture frame on the wall. (of course, i'd return the window to said dingy, dusty basement when I moved out!)
ReplyDeleteinspiration overload....we want to paint our whole cottage white....the floors already are.....and we're chicken....BUT NOW......I think we just might do it !
ReplyDeleteThey really accent the interior space. Where do you find old windows?
ReplyDeletegrow taller secrets
I was so thrilled to find this blog, I think we were separated at birth as far as style and tastes go...we just renovted upstairs and I had them put a window above the stairwell into a wall to a bedroom,,I wasnt sure at first but wanted light not dark...then I saw your blog ! LOve it ..absolutely...!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your farm table? I love it.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteThe photos on this post aren't from our home... so, unfortunately, I can't help you. I you are in fact talking about out dining room, though, the table in there came from a little antiques/junk store in Landrum, SC.
best,
-maria
This just gave me the best idea for some new clients of mine! Thank you! I hope they go for the idea.
ReplyDeleteYour themes are so simple! For me, these are more appealing. I'm currently living in St. Louis, MO. I moved here last month. I'm now planning for windows replacement because I want the outdoor air to pass easily to my room, and I also want my home interior to have a touch of Goth design. Next, I'll start painting the walls with white paints, and this whole week, I'll gather some good accessories for my room.
ReplyDeleteLove the mudroom. May also work for a sort of foyer in my small home. Love your designs.
ReplyDeleteAsheville, NC?
Enchanted - yes, indeed. And thank you.
